The Eagle Nebula (Messier 16, or M16) is a large, active star-forming region located about 7,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Serpens. It spans roughly 70 by 55 light-years and is most famous for a feature within it: the Pillars of Creation12410.
The Pillars of Creation are towering columns of cold molecular hydrogen and dust—each about 4–5 light-years tall—where new stars are born. These pillars are bathed in ultraviolet light and sculpted by the winds of young stars in a nearby cluster (NGC 6611), with the denser parts of the pillars forming what’s known as evaporating gaseous globules (EGGs). These EGGs shield regions behind them and incubate new stars, which eventually emerge and further erode the pillars12346.
The Pillars became globally iconic following a 1995 Hubble Space Telescope image, which has since been rephotographed using more advanced instruments and new space telescopes such as the James Webb Space Telescope. Multi-wavelength observations reveal dense clouds, ongoing star formation, and the dynamic erosion of these structures by stellar winds1456.
There has been speculation, based on Spitzer Space Telescope observations, that a supernova shockwave may have already destroyed the pillars about 6,000 years ago; however, this is still debated—if true, their destruction will become visible from Earth in about 1,000 years due to the time light takes to travel3. Despite these uncertainties, the pillars remain a potent symbol of both the creation and destruction present in star-forming regions.
The Eagle Nebula and the Pillars of Creation showcase the cycle of star birth, the sculpting power of radiation and winds, and the ongoing evolution of nebular structures—making them one of the most recognized astronomical landmarks12348.
